I've been curious about this book ever since I found it on a list of Catholic fantasy novels for young adults. Overall, I am very pleased with it. The storyline is strong, although I felt that it lagged a little in the early parts of the story. The editing and formatting could have been better, but while it was a little distracting at first, I soon got used to it and it didn't bother me anymore.Claire is a very strong, but still sympathetic character, whom I enjoyed very much. I also loved Adrian, and I'm sad he didn't get to be in it more. I liked the arcs that Jared's and Ross's characters took, although Jared's isn't quite completed in this one. Minerva made an intimidating villain, although I have a feeling Anastasia will be even more so. The other characters - Elsie, Kerry, Sloane, Breaus, Sean etc. - had some great moments, too, although there were so many of them that even a 400-page book didn't give me quite as much as I wanted!
What really made this book a 5-star for me was the symbolism and how it had some very solid theology without being overbearing about it. It reminded me very much of The Chronicles of Narnia in that way. I'm really hoping that Steven South will write the sequel, as he has created an excellent universe and great characters which I would love to see return for another adventure.

The Queen of Steel and Fire edition by Steven South Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Older teens would probably like this book, I will probably read the sequel, unless it costs too much then I won't.
I enjoyed this book. Exciting and a book with morals, one that I would suggest to anyone. I think that this would also be a great book for junior high kids as well as adults. Looking forward to more books from this new author. Thanks for a great book!
I read this book on the recommendation of my mom. She read it and had really enjoyed it. I like Claire, the strong female character. It is a great story and the characters are developed very well. It is refreshing to read about a young woman who is faced with so much adversity but pulls herself together and shines through with the help of a strong, good, and divine power. I could hardly put it down. Looks like this is the beginning of a series, anxious to see if Anastasia will come back for revenge.
WHAT AN EXCITING PIECE OF WRITING! I FOUND MYSELF CAPTURED BY THE CHARACTERS AND THE DEPTH OF THE STORY! IT WAS A TRUE JOURNEY INTO A FANTASY WORLD THAT HELD MY INTEREST! I COULD NOT PUT IT AWAY, UNTIL I FINISHED IT! A WONDERFUL BOOK, WELL WRITTEN AND NEVER ENDING IN EMOTIONS, BACK GROUND OF CHARACTERS AND THEIR AMAZING INTERACTIONS! THE STORY HAVING WOMEN IN A POSITION OF MENTAL AND PHYSICAL STRENGTH! IT IS AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE, THAT WOMEN COULD BE MORE THAN WHAT WAS EXPECTED OF THEM! YES, I SO ENJOYED THIS BOOK! IF YOU LIKE ADVENTURE, WELL CONSTRUCTED STORY LINES, THEN THROW YOUR IMAGINATION INTO THIS! FIND THAT WORLD OF WONDER, IN THIS BOOK! WARMLY, Barbara Jack baabra1950 @yahoo.com <3 ) xxoo
The Queen of Steel and Fire by Steven South is a 434 page epic fantasy. It is written in third person, present tense and has forty-four chapters. I loved the drawn map of Teranak Island. The clipart with the banner and swords was very fitting. I was glad to see that South referred to The Queen of Steel and Fire as a series.
South did an incredible amount of world building. With his map, everything was easily imagined. He gave the reader enough detail without over-indulging. I also love a strong female lead. Claire Erinn was barely coming to terms with her father’s death, when she had to assume the crown and become queen. Her character growth is written very well and believable, as she struggles with her new power and comes to terms with who to trust.
There is no shortage of enemies to the crown, sorcery, traitors and even dragons. The twists will keep you guessing, thankfully no cookie cutter plots here. I really enjoyed the book and will gladly read another from this author. Recommended book.

One night I was out on , looking for some new stuff to download to my , and I came across this book. It sounded interesting, so I downloaded it and gave it a read. I am glad I did.
PLOT OVERVIEW Princess Claire's father has just died, the victim of a hidden assassin, leaving Claire to take the throne. But all is not well in the kingdom of Kelderan her father's murderer is still at large, and Claire's chancellor and general do not think a woman can lead. Nor does the leader of the Syncrestry, the religious order of the country. The chancellor and Syncrestry leader even go so far as to suggest that they become assistants to the new Queen, bringing them within the reach of the throne.
On the borders of Kelderan, an enemy army, lead by Queen Minerva of a neighboring kingdom, has begun to move. She wishes to add Kelderan to her kingdom, and to this end she utilizes both stealth and open attack. When Claire is nearly poisoned, she comes face to face with Death, and starts to learn that the Syncrestry is a lie.
On the day of her father's funeral, Claire is visited by the Dragon Knights, who come to give her her father's sword and make her the offer to let her train with them, as her father would have wanted. Claire accepts their offer and begins to train as a Dragon Knight. Meanwhile, her brother Jared is freed from prison, where he has been held ever since his attempt to murder his father, and joins forces with Minerva. After a failed first attack, it becomes obvious to both sides that war will follow. Claire embarks on a journey together her allies and prepare for war. Along the way, she meets Astra, a sort of guardian angel, and Sean, a blind prophet who helps her find the true God of the land, The Emperor.
WORLD BUILDING The story takes place in a fantasy world, and the world was well built. Monsters were described, as well as the other creatures, not exactly human, who dwell there. The prison scene involving beetles, was, I thought, particularly gruesome. The descriptions are good without going overboard.
RELIGIOUS I found it odd that when I downloaded this book, it was listed with Religious books. I could not understand the connection. And I did not understand the connection until Claire goes to visit Sean, who she was told by Astra to go and see. I enjoyed the discussion on what faith is. The story feels like an allegory, though the allegory doesn't become obvious until later parts of the book. I felt the blending of the allegory into the overall plot was seamless. There is what may also be a reference to the Lion, the With, and Wardrobe here. Readers of Lewis's work will remember that the name of Aslan's father is The Emperor-Across-the-Sea. Here the name of the true God is The Emperor.
MISC. NOTES All of the characters felt very strong, which I liked. Though I know YA novels have romance in them as a general rule, I'm glad this started off with drama and not romance. I was really intrigued by the beginning and the action of the story. The romance is softly done and doesn't even show up until around chapter 22. Sadly, it was left open by the ending of the book. While Queen Minerva receives justice for her actions, her sister escapes, as does Claire's brother Jared, setting up the plot for a sequel. I didn't feel like I was left hanging at the end, though, waiting for more, as is the case with some books. The ending is satisfactory, wrapping up the major elements of the plot and leaving room for more. The book as a whole is excellent, and earned a five star rating from me.
