The Further Adventures of Jack Lime James Leck Books Reviews
I'm a sucker for high school noir, whether it's played straight or played for laughs.
At the top of the list is the movie "Brick", which features Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a teenage loner who pushes his way into the underworld of a high school crime ring to investigate the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend. It is played absolutely straight and observes all of the noir conventions, just reworked to accommodate the realities of high school life. Essentially, Gordon-Levitt's character "walks the mean hallways but is not himself mean".
At the other end are the funny noirs for younger readers. There is a whole series of Chet Gecko books, where we follow the adventures of a gecko p.i. who solves problems in his elementary school. All of the characters are animals, and the noir conventions are used for sly puns and jokes and laughs.
In the middle is where we find Jack Lime. High School is full or rackets, mysteries, bullies, extortion, drugs and gambling. Nice girls get into fixes and regular guys get mixed up with bad elements. Jack Lime can't help getting involved. He fits the Raymond Chandler description "He will take no man's money dishonestly and no man's insolence without a due and dispassionate revenge. He is a lonely man and his pride is that you will treat him as a proud man or be very sorry you ever saw him." In the wide world of middle grade fiction this is a unique and interesting protagonist.
The challenge in these books is to balance the noir elements, the school elements, the sassy banter, and the plot and to keep the tone consistent. That is so hard, and almost all of these books sometimes show the effort it takes to walk the delicate line between honest regard for the story and parody of the genre. This book generally succeeds in walking that line and if it is occasionally a bit bumpy or thin, that seems a small price to pay for the overall good result.
Anyway, there are only so many high school romances, or paranormal romances, or comedies, or fantasies or magical-adventures or kitchen sink dramas that you can read before you need a change of pace, and this book delivers on that front. And if it leads a young reader into more adult noir fare, that seems to me to be a good thing.
So, well written, snappy, engaging and fresh, and a nice intro to noir - seems worth consideration.
Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.
