The Day of the Dolphin Robert Merle 9780449232408 Books Reviews
Fascinating read. Its done in a style of the 60's sci Fi stories, with stream-of-consciousness characters portrayals and some difficult behavioral soft-science observations. Each chapter is started with dialog without punctuation and is ended with inner reflections of a character not often clearly indicated. The prose is college -level difficulty, but makes sense if read carefully. This style is adopted to obfuscate the implictions fo the scientific research project they are conducting, where dolphines are set up to fail in an experiment that reveals more about the experimenters and their inability to see themselves and how deeply involved they are in the observation process. It reminds me of my novels, The Glass Planet Series, where the observers become involved in a scientific research project, changing lives and the history of mankind. If I were a college professor I would make this into a semester course work, and not many books get that kind of rating from me. Its a difficult one, but worth it if you want to learn and are willing to pay attention, and not simply need to be entertained.
I have mixed feelings about "The Day of the Dolphin" There are certainly some nice details about the natural history of dolphins in this science fiction tale set in the East versus West "Cold War," and there's some good character development, however, there's much 1960s-era speculation about the animals that has yet to show scientific merit. While an engaging, expansive concept in scope, the style of the book requires dedication to get through; it doesn't use standard narrative means (such as quotations, etc.) and, at times, reads in a stream of consciousness voice—also heavy use of fictional tape-recording transcript dialoguing of research and interrogation sessions. (Personally, the leftist politics undergirding the novel were a turn off to me.) Merle's idea of talking dolphins still remains science fantasy. Today, as far as I can ascertain from various online sources, the creatures do not appear to be as intelligent as researchers once hoped. In some ways, I think the 1974 Buck Henry screenplay for the Mike Nichols film of the same title nicely streamlined the author's ponderous original (eliminating subplots, characters and other things). Apparently, the novel was extremely popular when its English translation (from the French) appeared in 1969—bit it is no longer in print. I wonder what its lasting literary legacy will be, if any?
It is a classic old science fiction novel, I had always loved books and movies with animals in them so it was a perfect fit!!!
