If, like most, you are saturated by the debate on the origin of our species, as human, watch out, look at your hands again, and you may see claws or less than five fingers. Huahuqui, reminds me, as a reader that our descendent origin is not necessarily only from the Garden of Eden.No. It is possible that in the larger womb of biochemical mixes, from the sea, that we sprang… from a creature. Or at least having some form of bestial DNA. But, as Huahuqui begins to unravel our encoded genetic material, we may well find that our nucleotides stem from a lovelier creature. The thrilling fear is our own.
Huahuqui thrillers in a subliminal way. Kelly, flippant and well irritating and Freya, the liberated female, set the metaphor for a stock male on female thriller interplay. But I read on, inspired by the idea that beyond the reproductive continuation of our species, and living, as we do, with an apple of discord rolled in amongst us; that from our greed will stem hope.
A hope that may save us from the path of control and destruction, on which humanity seems destined to achieve. My hope, after Huahuqui, is in such a creature. Maybe because the Brothers Grimm left me in a world, as a child, of wonder and belief that contrast this world in which I find myself.
Huahuqui is a quick read, and takes one on a Jules Verne fantasy, 2000 Leagues under the sea. Remember that Jules knew about the possibility of submarines, well, so did Da Vinci; but what does Gareth Worthington know that we don’t and is hinting at in Huahuqui?
I was left, without a resolve in Huahuqui, but pampered by knowing that Huaquero, the next in sequence would satisfy my attachment to the Huahuqui creature – many, many leagues under the sea, and further on.

This book was not what I expected when I picked it up. It starts out focussing on the lives of two men and ends up involving entire nations. I couldn't wait to see where it was leading and how it would end. There a lot of great descriptions and facts that sometimes I was unsure what was real and what was fictional. The multiple story lines that eventually converged kept the book interesting. This was amplified by the short, punchy sentence construction and chapter movement. The character development was well written, and their eventual connection with each other is cleverly devised. Kelly, in particular has a very interesting backstory that is revealed in short bursts of information throughout.
English is not my mother tongue and the author has done a great job of making this easily read by an international audience.
My only criticism, is that this book has masses of information and an incredible storyline - but it could have been much longer. I assume, from how it ends, the author intends to write more. I look forward to reading any sequel!
I would definitely recommend this novella to anyone who is looking for something to carry with them and read when they have a spare few minutes! Just don't get sucked in and miss your appointment!
Gareth Worthington's sci-fi novella, Huahuqui, is a brief, but entertaining read. I am deeply respectful of Worthington's skill at telling such a riveting story in less than 146 pages. This specific genre is one of the most challenging to write and sell because the writer has to create not only an entertaining storyline, but characters readers want to invest in in a short span of time. Although some of the military language and scientific jargon was a bit over my head, I was still thoroughly entertained and involved in the plight of Kelly and his cohorts. The idea that our ancient ancestors - a different strand of the human gene - exists somewhere out in the deep dark sea is both fascinating and frightening. This book definitely played on my fears of the ocean, a reminder that man is not all powerful or alone.
Finally, I must say that I love it when the female characters are given a role in the outcome of the storyline, and not just portrayed as a sexual entity there to distract or relieve the heroes tensions and frustrations. In Graham's story, all characters have a part to play and are not wasted. I look forward to reading part II in the series, Huaquero.
The problem with giving 3 stars makes me look like a wimp , that I can't make up my mind. If the author had not put in Kelly's nightmares over his wife's. Death I would have given it 4 stars. But in my opinion too many pages were given over his nightmares which had nothing to do with the ending. REAL good ending, the author may write a sequel due to how it ended
Suspend disbelief and let yourself travel on a downriver, undersea, and overland adventure in this well-constructed novella. The author takes you on a fast paced journey full of intrigue, government secrets, unusual creatures and just a tad of romance all packed in a few (perhaps too few?) pages and you are left wanting more. Superlatives abound and the literary illumination paints an image so clear you feel you are there with the characters. For those who know the author, there are bit of his personality revealed which makes reading the novella even more enjoyable. A bit Tom Clancy, a hint of Dan Brown -- authentically Gareth in his debut work. Highly recommended for a quick read on a lazy afternoon !
Two seemingly separate torylines merge into one great read. If you like Clive Cussler and Brad Pitt, you will like Garret Worthington and Kelly Graham.
The book turned out to be quite a surprise. I must say that although it is the very first published book by the author, in no way the writing is amateurish. The story started off with a bang and built up quickly only ended with more suspense. Even the protagonist, Kelly, has never ceased to amuse me with the way he cursed!
Was not what I had expected. Better and more action than anticipated. Author knows how to get your attention, move quickly forward without revealing entire plot until end. Definitely going to read more from author.
